Rethinking cruising
A team from Excellence supported our project partner in the development of alternative drive technologies for cruise ships. The shipping industry is one of the most emission-intensive sectors and faces the challenge of developing environmentally friendly alternatives. In order to achieve the goal of climate-neutral cruise ships, innovative propulsion technologies are being researched and implemented. These developments not only reduce CO₂ emissions, but also create sustainable solutions that can be used beyond the shipping industry.

The shipping industry is one of the most emission-intensive sectors and faces the challenge of developing environmentally friendly alternatives. In order to achieve the goal of climate-neutral cruise ships, innovative propulsion technologies are being researched and implemented. These developments not only reduce CO₂ emissions, but also create sustainable solutions that can be used beyond the shipping industry.
Development of alternative drives
We actively support companies and shipyards in the development of new propulsion concepts and contribute our expertise both in project management and in the development of innovative technologies.
We focus in particular on the development of fuel cell systems and sustainable fuel concepts, for example on the basis of LNG (liquefied natural gas). Development tasks include system integration, operational safety and robustness in a maritime environment as well as the development of energy management systems.
Development towards climate-neutral shipping
The project is a fundamental milestone in the targeted decarbonization of shipping. Sustainable energy sources can be used to completely avoid pollutant emissions while ships are in port. Fuel cells in particular offer great potential, as they efficiently convert water and oxygen into electricity and heat - without any harmful emissions, with water vapor as the only by-product. Their quiet and low-vibration operation also makes them ideal for use on cruise ships.
With our support, we are promoting the development of climate-friendly drive technologies and thus making an important contribution to the sustainable transformation of shipping in order to bring the industry closer to its goal of climate neutrality.
